The Children’s Protection Society was proud to host an art exhibition celebrating the importance of families in the lives of children as part of National Families Week. The exhibition ‘Our Families’ featured the artwork from 30 children from Ivanhoe East Primary School. Functional families provide the corner stone for happy, healthy and well adjusted children.

The exhibition was officially opened by Ms Jenny Mikakos, Member for Northern Metropolitan Region, and Planning Secretary for Planning who congratulated the young artists on their beautiful art work which conveyed their love of their families and the joy they find in spending time together. Ms Mikakos commented on the importance of families, both immediate and extended and on the valuable work CPS does in supporting vulnerable children and families in our community. She presented each artist with a certificate of appreciation and a small gift.

Mr Tim Mulvany, CPS President hosted this exciting and happy event to which 30 child artists and their families and school community attended. The central aim of National Families Week 2010 is to encourage all Australians to think about and celebrate the many different people who make families united and strong and the many different types of families across society, each deserving respect and acknowledgement. This year’s theme is: National Families Week – The best start supporting happy healthy families.

Ivanhoe East children from prep to grade four produced art work depicting their families at home and doing activities together. The message the children convey is that they value spending time with their families eating, playing, going to the park and holidaying – they illustrate very clearly just how important families are to young children. Jenny Wing, Manager - Child and Family Services at CPS said ‘How exciting it was to welcome so many families to CPS to celebrate the children’s artistic achievements. It was wonderful to see the pride on the children’s faces as they showed their art work to their families.’

The art exhibition is part of our “Covering Empty Walls Project” which links CPS to the community through art.

The artwork will remain on display in the Elaine Marriner Children’s Art Gallery at CPS, 70 Altona Street, Heidelberg West, until the end of August and can be viewed during the hours of 9-5pm Monday to Friday.
