Our latest Art Exhibition Opening was indeed a family affair. More than 60 children from 3 local Primary Schools : Banyule, Heidelberg and St Martin of Tours came together with their families and members of their school communities to celebrate the importance of families during National Families Week .

The exhibition was officially opened by Ms Jillian Crowe, Regional Co-ordinating Magistrate, Heidelberg Magistrates Court. Who thought it was the loveliest job she’d had all week, if not all year! She congratulated the artists on their fabulous artwork portraying their families and presented them with a certificate and small gift of appreciation. She commented on how fortunate they all were to be part of families who care for and support them. Functional families provide the corner stone for happy, healthy and well adjusted children and give them the best start they can have in life.

The central aim of National Families Week 2009 is to encourage all Australians to think about and celebrate the many different people who make families united and strong and the many different types of families across society, each deserving respect and acknowledgement. The theme is: National Families Week – Celebrate how everyone makes a difference.

Heidelberg children from grades prep to six produced art work depicting their families at work and play. The message the children convey is that they value spending time with their families eating, playing, going to the park and even cleaning – they illustrate very clearly just how important families are to young children. Ms Bernadette Burchell CEO says
‘How exciting it is for CPS to welcome local families into our centre to join with us in celebrating the important part families play in children’s lives. The response was wonderful with parents, siblings grandparents and aunties and uncles attending the opening admiring the children’s work.’

Congratulations were extended to all the artists for their fabulous work.
The artwork will remain on display in The Elaine Marriner Children’s Art Gallery at CPS until the end of June and can be viewed during the hours of 9-5pm Monday to Friday.
